The Greene County Ram girls varsity team topped the CMB Raiders 41-34 in Jefferson Dec. 4 for its first win of the season.
The Rams played more than six minutes and were down 8-0 before putting a point on the scoreboard. Both teams were cold in their shooting, with the score at the end of the quarter only 8-4. The Rams battled in the second quarter – the score at halftime was 17-15, with the Raiders in the lead.
The Rams tied the score at 18 with 5:30 to play in the third quarter. The Rams took the lead with a 3-pointer by Taylor Wessling with less than two minutes to play, and they held the lead and stretched it for the final margin.
Sophomore Laurin Lyons again led the team in scoring with 15 points, nearly twice her output against Perry Tuesday night. Junior Taylor Wessling scored seven, senior Sunny Mobley scored six, senior Nicole Rohner and junior Hannah Promes scored five points each, with Promes scoring a 3-pointer. Junior Kenna Marquardt scored two points.
Both teams were challenged by shooting. The Rams shot at 23 percent and the Raiders shot at 21 percent.
The win puts the Rams at 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference. The Raiders are 0-3 in the HOIAC, with losses to Gilbert and Nevada.
The Rams play at South Hamilton (Jewell) next Tuesday, Dec. 8.
